Throughout the month, we will be taking various actions to raise awareness among people living with diabetes and their loved ones, as well as the public and healthcare professionals.
Why November?
In 1991, the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) created World Diabetes Day (WDD) in response to the steady increase in diabetes cases. The day chosen for the event is November 14, as this is the birthday of Frederick Banting, co-discoverer of insulin with Charles Best, in 1921.
Since then, World Diabetes Day has continued to grow and eventually became an international day celebrated by the United Nations. This makes it the largest diabetes awareness campaign in the world. Actions now extend beyond November 14 and the entire month of November is dedicated to the cause.
The 2021 theme
This year’s IDF theme for World Diabetes Day is Access to Diabetes Care. The goal is to raise awareness of the importance of access to quality care for people living with diabetes.
This theme is particularly relevant this year as we celebrate 100 years since the discovery of insulin. To learn more about the anniversary of this discovery, click here.
