It generally consists of repeatedly alternating short periods of fasting with periods where one can eat without any restriction. Currently, <strong>no specific protocol exists regarding the duration and frequency of fasting periods.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><mark style=\"background-color:#FFFFFF\" class=\"has-inline-color has-grey-800-color\">What happens when you fast?<\/mark><\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>En temps normal, la principale source d\u2019\u00e9nergie du corps est le glucose (sucre). Celui-ci provient principalement des aliments que nous mangeons. Lorsque nous je\u00fbnons, le corps n&#8217;a plus acc\u00e8s au glucose des aliments et doit ainsi trouver d&#8217;autres sources d&#8217;\u00e9nergie. Il va alors puiser dans ses propres r\u00e9serves, de gras principalement, pour fabriquer du glucose. La d\u00e9gradation des gras entra\u00eene la production de corps c\u00e9toniques.\u00a0C\u2019est, entre autres, ce m\u00e9canisme qui entra\u00eeneraient les b\u00e9n\u00e9fices suppos\u00e9ment attribu\u00e9s au je\u00fbne intermittent.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\"><div class=\" block-background theme-block theme-block--innerblock alignfull bg-color--grey no-curve\" >\n\n  <span class=\"theme-block__label\">Section with background<\/span>\n  \n  \n  \n    \n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">If you are thinking of doing intermittent fasting, it is essential to discuss with your healthcare team, particularly if you have a prescribed diabetes medication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n                    \n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What would be the <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-primary-color\">benefits<\/mark> of intermittent fasting?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-grey-800-color\">Effects observed on humans<\/mark><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Weight\u00a0:<\/strong> this practice usually leads to weight loss, particularly when the periods of fasting last at least 24 hours. <strong>However, intermittent fasting does not always leads to a more significant weight loss than any other low-calorie diet.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-grey-800-color\">Effects observed on mice<\/mark><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-grey-800-color\">Body composition\u00a0<\/mark>: <\/strong>intermittent fasting could preserve the muscle mass more than other low-calorie diet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-grey-800-color\">Heart health\u00a0:<\/mark><\/strong> it is suggested that intermittent fasting could improve your blood pressure and cholesterol levels;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-grey-800-color\">Aging\u00a0:<\/mark> <\/strong>intermittent fasting could prevent age-related cognitive decline. Other studies are necessary to confirm this hypothesis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-grey-800-color\">Limitations of the studies<\/mark><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Lack of constancy<\/strong> between the types of fasting studied. There is currently no precise definition of intermittent fasting, making comparisons difficult.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Very little data on the <strong>long-term effects<\/strong> of intermittent fasting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Difficulties to maintain intermittent fasting in the long term. <strong>Most people stop intermittent fasting after several months and therefore lose all the potential benefits linked to it.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lack of studies on humans<\/strong>. The results mainly come from studies conducted solely on mice only and can not necessarily be applied to humans.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">What would be the<\/mark> effects <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">dof intermittent fasting<\/mark> on diabetes? \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Intermittent fasting may improve the glycated hemoglobin (A1c), which reflects the average blood sugar level over the past two to three months. However, <strong>no significant difference in A1c has been observed when comparing intermittent fasting to other types of diet.<\/strong> This suggests that the observed effect may be attributed to weight loss rather than intermittent fasting itself.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-grey-800-color\">Risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)<\/mark><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Few studies on the subject have been conducted among people living with diabetes who are at risk of hypoglycemia. Special attention must be given to these people, <strong>as this practice could increase the risk of hypoglycemia.<\/strong> Close monitoring by a healthcare team and regular blood sugar checks are recommended.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Intermittent fasting and <\/mark>disordered eating<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Extended periods of fasting can lead to extreme hunger, stress, frustration from food deprivation, and more. These could trigger obsessive behaviors and increase the risk of developing eating disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">In<\/mark> conclusion<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><br>While intermittent fasting appears to bring some benefits, these do <strong>not seem to surpass the results obtained with other low-calorie diets<\/strong>. Additionally, like all restrictive diets, it is unlikely to be sustainable in the long term.
