{"id":13733,"date":"2022-12-08T13:26:17","date_gmt":"2022-12-08T18:26:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.diabete.qc.ca\/carpaccio-doranges\/conduite-automobile-et-diabete\/"},"modified":"2023-06-06T16:34:17","modified_gmt":"2023-06-06T20:34:17","slug":"car-driving","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.diabete.qc.ca\/en\/diabetes\/living-with-diabetes\/car-driving\/","title":{"rendered":"Driving and diabetes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Individuals with diabetes may drive an automobile, if they take certain precautions and comply with the special requirements of their disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">General precautions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Individuals with diabetes who have a driver\u2019s license must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Have regular checkups by a physician (to assess potential diabetes&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.diabete.qc.ca\/en\/diabetes\/information-on-diabetes\/diabetes-complications\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">complications<\/a>&nbsp;and blood&nbsp;glucose&nbsp;(sugar) control);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have a good understanding of their disease and follow the recommendations of health care professionals;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take certain precautions when driving (primarily people at risk of&nbsp;hypoglycemia).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Precautions for individuals being treated with insulin or an insulin secretagogue*<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You must measure your blood glucose (sugar) levels before taking the wheel, then every 4 hours thereafter on long trips. Your blood glucose (sugar) levels should be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Above 4 mmol\/L if you are driving a car or motorcycle<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Above 6 mmol\/L if you are driving a vehicle other than a car or motorcycle (classes 1, 2, 3, 4)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have ever had severe hypoglycemia or hypoglycemic episodes with no warning signs, caution is advised. You should measure your blood glucose (sugar) levels before you depart and every hour thereafter. In this case, your blood glucose (sugar) level should be above 6 mmol\/L before taking the wheel of a car or motorcycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*Gliclazide (Diamicron<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>&nbsp;and Diamicron MR<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>), Glimepiride (Amaryl<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>), Glyburide (Diabeta<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Euglucon<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>),&nbsp;Repaglinide (GlucoNorm<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What you should do in the case of hypoglycemia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>e sure that you always carry sources of rapidly absorbed carbohydrates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you feel the&nbsp;signs&nbsp;of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.diabete.qc.ca\/en\/diabetes\/diabetes-management\/hypoglycemia-in-an-individual-with-diabetes\/\">hypoglycemia<\/a>&nbsp;while you are driving:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Stop.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take a blood&nbsp;glucose&nbsp;(sugar) reading.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If it is below 4 mmol\/L, treat the hypoglycemia.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>You should wait 45 minutes before taking the wheel again. This is the delay necessary to return to normal vigilance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If it\u2019s impossible for you to measure your blood glucose (sugar) level but you feel the symptoms of impending hypoglycemia, don\u2019t take a chance. Eat some&nbsp;carbohydrates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Responsibilities of drivers to the SAAQ<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Driving a vehicle is a privilege, not a right. Thus, a licensed driver is required to inform the SAAQ of any change to his\/her physical or mental condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To reduce the risk of accidents, the Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de l\u2019assurance automobile du Qu\u00e9bec (SAAQ ) must ensure that drivers have the necessary physical and mental capabilities to safely operate a motor vehicle. Obviously, the SAAQ cannot conduct a complete health examination of every licensed driver in the Province of Qu\u00e9bec. Consequently, it must rely on a declaration from the driver or a health care professional, or the results of a medical checkup, for the health status of every Qu\u00e9bec driver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mandatory Driver Declaration<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Driving a vehicle is a privilege, not a right. Thus, a licensed driver is required to inform the SAAQ of any change to his\/her physical or mental condition when first applying for a driver\u2019s license, when renewing the license, and within 30
