Insulin is a hormone, produced by the pancreas, which helps the cells of the body use the glucose (sugar) in food. Cells need this energy in order to function properly.<\/p>\n<p>Sugar builds up in the bloodstream and is excreted in the urine.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, the high blood sugar caused by excessive amounts of glucose in the blood leads to a variety of complications, particularly for the eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart and blood vessels.<\/p>\n<p>There are different types of diabetes: <a href=\"\/en\/diabetes\/information-on-diabetes\/prediabetes\/\">prediabetes<\/a>,<a href=\"\/en\/diabetes\/information-on-diabetes\/type-1-diabetes\/\"> type 1<\/a>, <a href=\"\/en\/diabetes\/information-on-diabetes\/type-2-diabetes\/\">type 2<\/a>, <a href=\"\/en\/diabetes\/information-on-diabetes\/diabetes-in-pregnancy\/\">gestational (pregnancy) diabetes<\/a> and <a href=\"\/en\/diabetes\/information-on-diabetes\/other-types-of-diabetes\/\">other types<\/a>.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Diabetes is a chronic, incurable disease that occurs when the body doesn\u2019t produce any or enough insulin, leading to an excess of sugar in the blood.
