Group

Our groups are comprised of 10 (min.) to 20 travellers (max). A local English-speaking Chinese Guide and a bilingual accompanying person will be with you.

Accommodation

During the trek, you will spend five nights in a tent. We will set up camp sites along the Great Wall of China and in small villages. The tents are supplied by World Expeditions/Huma Challenge and are spacious enough to accommodate two people.

In Beijing, you will spend three nights in a well-located 3 or 4-star hotel.

Environment

The tourist site surrounding the Great Wall of China is extremely fragile. It is our responsibility as visitors to properly dispose of our waste. Toilet paper can be burned or buried. It is also recommended that you bring a plastic bag into which you can throw the waste materials that you accumulate during the day.

Physical fitness

This adventure is a long-term moderate aerobic challenge for your body; in other words, your heart and your lungs must make a considerable effort to deliver large amounts of oxygenated blood throughout your body. You will be astounded at how easy it will be to get yourself in shape for this test. You don't need to join a sports centre and you can integrate your training into your daily routine.

But, be careful if you have never engaged in intense physical activity and consult your doctor before undertaking anything.

RULE NUMBER 1: START EARLY! Some tips

  1. Start to prepare your body three to five months before the Huma Challenge;
  2. Create a sports training program that will become an essential part of your routine after a few weeks. Take note of the length of your training sessions, the distances covered and your pulse rate at rest in the morning. This should slow down as the months pass, as you get in better and better shape;
  3. If you don't do sports regularly, start with 20 to 30-minute sessions, three times a week;
  4. Over a period of four to five weeks, increase the rhythm to five sessions a week, with two sessions lasting one to two hours and the other three lasting from 30 to 45 minutes;
  5. As much as possible, vary the exercises (e.g.: climbs, descents, with a backpack weighing at least five kilos);
  6. During the month prior to departure, you should be able to put in five to seven hours of physical effort over a distance of 20 kilometres, with breaks;
  7. Join a hiking club in your area. It is always good to work towards an objective with people who are of the same mind as you are. This will be an occasion to discover picturesque pathways near your home;
  8. Be creative! Go jogging or jump in the pool to swim a few lengths. A varied physical training program is the best way to ensure that all your muscles are worked and get toned;
  9. Exercise wearing the equipment you will use during your Huma Challenge. This will enable you to break in your hiking boots, your backpack and your clothing, in good weather and bad. This way, you will see what really suits you;
  10. The week before departure, stop all physical activity. Let your body rest before the tough test that awaits it;
  11. Don't do too much at the start; embark wisely on the Huma Challenge.

If you have any questions about your preparation for the Trek Challenge or if you want to make sure that your sports training plan is properly adapted to your physical condition, consult a trainer or contact us.
